The majority of dogs often benefit from a bath once a month, keeping the coat’s care requirements in mind. Breeds with oily coats, like Basset Hounds or Labrador Retrievers, may require bathing as frequently as once a week. Other breeds of short- or medium-haired dogs typically do just fine with a monthly bath. If your dog has long hair, you might want to brush them more frequently than you bathe them. This promotes the distribution of natural oils for a lustrous, healthy coat while keeping your dog’s coat clean.
The frequency of your dog’s baths will depend on the needs of each individual dog. Dogs should essentially only be bathed when absolutely required. When a dog has an unpleasant odor or has accumulated dirt or mud on its coat, it usually needs to be bathed.
Therefore, a wash is probably not essential at that point if your dog smells normal (the majority of dogs have a healthy dog smell that is not unpleasant) and is not dirty.
Too many baths can dry out a dog’s skin and coat, which can lead to complications. Since the natural oils on the skin and coat won’t be stripped away too regularly, bathing only when necessary should help prevent the skin from drying out due to frequent bathing.
